Around here, everyone bottom fishes for grouper with live and/or dead bait. The problem with that is, we have a big problem in our area with the Goliath Grouper eating everything you hook. It was getting rare to get a keeper grouper off the bottom and in the boat without a goliath eating it. Something had to change; I got tired of my clients not bringing home any big fish. I used to troll in Tampa Bay with planers and buck tail jigs for grouper. This would not work in the area I was fishing because it was too deep for that and the drop back from the planer tripping would allow the fish a chance to get back in the structure. We started experimenting with the stretch 30’s and boy has it paid off! EVERYTHING eats them.
We have caught Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, cobia, amberjack, sharks, barracuda, kingfish, Spanish mackerel, goliath grouper, tuna and probably others that I can’t think of now. I attached a couple pictures of recent trips.
The Stretch 30+ bait that this fishtale is referring to has since been upgraded and is now called the "Stretch Textured 30+". To see this bait click here: Stretch Textured 30+
